So, this video above recently came across my YouTube recommendations and it was interesting watch. I’ve never heard of this YouTube channel, but I don’t go into anything new without an open mind. This video altogether does an amazing job at highlighting what exactly is Trump’s plan and how it would really impact the daily consumer. The video states that according to Trump himself, the plan is to increase tariffs on all imported good from all countries, using them not only as a general tax but also as a geopolitical weapon to support him in helping immigration issues and how this should, in theory, be enough to replace income tax on the individual American consumer and produce increased revenue for domestic companies. It also states that this wouldn’t really solve anything, for two main reasons:
- imported goods would decrease and the amount of money made from this plan would be overall less comparing to the current structure for how the government is funded
- Prices for consumer would increase for domestic goods as well as imported goods, since domestic companies also have an interest in making as much money out of consumers as they can
These, in my opinion, are valid enough points to support the foundation that Trump wasn’t a good choice for president. However, he did win.
With a Trump presidency around the corner and these tariffs supposedly going to take place, I would also like to showcase another point that the video above did not really dive into; which corporations would benefit from this plan. Since most businesses in America do not operate on a local level and rely on imported good to some degree, there are corporations that are operating in the USA that would get an increase in revenue, even if that margin would be slim. The list of those corporations is pretty much every corporation that most daily consumers interact with, including*:
- Walmart
- Ford
- Kellogg
- McDonalds
- Johnson and Johnson
- Dole
The reason I want to bring this up is to highlight a point of fact regarding what this new plan will do and what it will not do. In my opinion, from what I understand regarding how business works, this will NOT increase revenue for small, local businesses and producers due to the scale in which the above companies, alongside many other companies, already operate on. This plan that Trump wants to implement wasn’t even INTENDED to help those local business thrive or compete with bigger business, but to bolster the revenue of companies like the ones listed above in favor of imported corporations, while raising the overall revenue of ALL corporations both internationally and domestically. Another reason why I specifically mentioned the above brands is due to the quality of products made from the USA compared to our imported good. If you are under the assumption that American products are better overall, these above companies showcase that what is American isn’t always what is best for Americans. Let me paint you the picture I see:
Kellogg, McDonalds, and Dole produce foods are are, overall, unhealthy for the general consumer, with Kellogg producing cereal, McDonalds with cheap burgers and Dole using high-sugar syrups and juices that on the same level of sugar as soda companies (which also operate domestically) which is all a baseline for the obesity issue that plagues Americans*. Walmart is the most accessible store in the country, and the food it sells are considered overall unhealthy*. Then, you have Ford, who is a truck manufacturer, which those affected by obesity are often times pushed into buying due to their individual weight*. And then you have Johnson and Johnson, who’s main products include orthopedic devices, artificial hearts, and diabetes medication*.
It is funny to think that we elected a president who is going to implement policies that tell a tale of obesity as not only the expected outcome, but as not even a main problem that can be fixed with new hearts and bodies. The elected Robert F. Kennedy as Jr. as Secretary of Health and Human services will have an impossible job trying to keep Americans healthy since he will be competing against these moguls, and while his idea to ban specific dyes and chemicals in manufacturing* is an idea I support, he isn’t going to be able to solve the overall problem with the health in the USA.
I know a lot of people who voted for Trump. Your reasons for voting him are your own. But if you voted for him because you think it will lower overall goods, not only is that inaccurate, but the only accessible foods will be those that drive people into obesity. Thank you for reading, and have a wonderful day.
